What a 3D spacer fabric actually is
Most fabrics are two-dimensional: a thin flat weave or knit, maybe with holes punched through it. A perforated vinyl or a punched-hole "breathable" cover is still fundamentally a flat sheet — put weight on it and it presses down onto the foam underneath, and the holes stop doing anything because there's no space left for air to sit in.

Because the standoff layer is columns-and-gaps rather than solid material, the finished fabric is overwhelmingly open air by volume — only a small fraction is actual fibre.
